His story of his deployment to Iraq provides not only an up close look at the war, but also a view of the struggles deployed soldiers endure, both on the battlefield and upon returning home.
Bullseye chronicles the six-week adventure of an amnesiac widowed journalist working in Spain. Peter had been floundering in his own American abyss after the horrific accident. He had few ideas of his own that weren’t drowned in the blend of alcohol and meds. His life had to be told to him by the vaguely familiar faces of others. One of those constants was his trouble making friend, Paul. While inebriated, Paul ‘helped’ concoct the trip to Spain. Although setting out to write about Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls, Peter changed courses after watching a bull fight. That’s when he fell down the rabbit hole into endless degrees of obsessive exposure to bullfighting, matadors, toreros, flamenco, toro and gypsies. Taking on more research and writing led Peter to enlightening encounters usually revolving around celebration with a unique and at times disturbing casts of characters. Uncorking Peter’s already bad habits of overindulgence led to a lot of drunken debauchery. The sweltering summer of Spain with its hot women, all heightened by the testosterone of Spanish culture...all kept the heat rising in Peter. With the language barrier bringing him more trouble than he could understand, by the time Peter figured this out his life was already in danger...again.
Found cowering and covered in blood, Karina Guerrero's fourteen-year-old brother is accused of a crime that she's certain he didn't commit. Only one man can help Karina prove the boy's innocence. But the former cop, now committed to helping the falsely accused, is clearly uneasy being back in Albuquerque—and working with his former flame. Still, Karina can't help falling for the handsome P.I. as they hunt the real killer: a cold-blooded murderer with dangerous ties to them both.
TOUGH. TENACIOUS. TRUE BLUE. Secret Service agent Isabella Gray thought those traits described bounty hunter Jacob Powell to a T. When the secretary of defense's family was ambushed on her watch, she knew she needed to recruit the sexy ex-Special Forces soldier for help. Isabella recognized all too well the shot of adrenaline that pulsed through her former lover upon learning that Big Sky's quarry—militia men on the lam—were behind the abduction. Forced to rely on each other after their rescue mission led to a harrowing plane crash, neither could resist the pent-up emotions churning between them. Once Jacob stumbled upon shocking evidence that an international mastermind could be pulling all the strings, would their red-hot passion chase away the chill of terror?
Bully . . . described in the Concise English Dictionary:"a browbeating person, esp someone who is habitually cruel toother weaker people;"intimidate with persistently aggressive or violent behaviour, orby using threats of violence;"These two descriptions are certainly true, but to the victims whohave so generously submitted their stories for inclusion in this book . . .they would barely be adequate. I have been one such victim. But my taleof woe is NOTHING compared with the humiliation, embarrassment, degradation and so much more that many of the people featured in thisbook have suffered, many still suffering. The suggestion of writing a book about bullying was put to me someyears ago . . . I cannot actually recall who did suggest it, or when, but itcertainly planted a seed in my mind. Research through those years hassuggested that many have written books before me, but no-one seems tohave actually devoted a book almost entirely to stories of victims . . . thiswas my goal. In communicating with these and other victims, both currentand past, I found that they all appeared to have the same message . . . justhow therapeutic it was to be able to . . . just talk about it . . . get it off theirchests. Of course, there are always the exceptions. Sadly, one particularvictim has been so badly scarred that he found it too difficult to write hisexperiences at all. And writing their stories will never change the fact that these people have been bullied. Many have had counselling, many havenot . . . many are still undergoing this. Some cases are far more serious thanothers . . . some have undergone the court process . . . others are still goingthrough this . . .The stories within these pages vary hugely . . . from supposedly minorcases through to some which are far some serious. But irrespective of theseverity of them, the effects on the victims have been horrendous. Manyhave made my blood boil.Doing this has given me a very small idea of just how mammoth thisproblem is and that it is EVERYWHERE. No-one is immune, nor is anyinstitution, any situation. It takes place at any age, any gender, any faith, anywhere, any time. Many of the victims were bullied in their teens and/or childhood, and some of these people were raised in the years prior to bullying beingrecognized and/or acknowledged. For some victims it is past tense, forothers a very current and continuing nightmare. Some stories have comefrom various work places. There are even a couple written by people whohave been bullied and have been bullies themselves. What has disturbed and infuriated me throughout (and believe me, Iwould NOT have wanted to have my blood pressure nor stress levels takenwhile doing this), something that does appear to be a common thread, particularly with the stories taken from schools . . . in seeking help, justiceand compensation through the appropriate channels, the education andlegal systems, in almost every case it appears that that the perpetrator/s is/are the ones who have been supported . . . NOT the victims. Most if notall schools maintain that they have a ''bullying policy'' in place . . . but givenall that is covered in these stories, and some of the outcomes, I do have toquestion . . . just how effective are these policies and who are they aimingto help?In one particular case, the victim lost her father, which was tragicenough in itself, but then . . . from what I can see, she was bullied . . . partlyfor this reason? Losing her father? WHY? What is the MENTALITYof bullies?A few of these histories are quite long and, as previously mentioned, some victims continue their fight for compensation and/or justice. I haveand do feel so much for the parents, families of the victims and for thevictims themselves. Overall from what I have learned, the attitudes of theschools leave me cold. I am not saying that this applies in all cases worldwide . . . goodness knows, those in the following pages are only the smallest drop in the ocean compared with the amount o
At last, in this book, the great paradox of measurement is resolved. According to the authors' original -- and revealing -- research companies that manage by measurement outperform less disciplined competitors by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus an average ROI of 45 percent. Yet few companies have put in place a disciplined approach for measuring the key nonfinancial, strategic performance areas that are so crucial to a firm's success. Bullseye! treats measurement as a key senior-management business issue. The authors explore the role of measurement in adding clarity and specificity to an organization's strategy, and in driving efforts to translate strategy into operational initiatives and business results. Organizational change and measurement experts William Schiemann and John Lingle have written the first book to provide a complete detailed blueprint for implementing a strategic measurement system. To resolve the measurement paradox, they have created as the centerpiece of Bullseye! a detailed case study that describes a four-phase process that will successfully transform any company into a measurement-managed organization. The four phases of this process are: defining a strategic business model, designing measures to support the model cascading the model and measures throughout the organization, and embedding the measures into the leadership processes of the organization. In eminently readable prose, the authors confront head-on the powerful forces that conspire to prevent a company from gaining the full value from its measurement system. In the process, Schiemann and Lingle have developed an integrative framework that covers all the major measurement areas: markets and customers, finance, people, operations, the environment, and suppliers. In fact, the authors go Beyond other published accounts of measurement systems by providing strategic tools to manage customer, community, environmental, and regulatory stakeholders along with suppliers, and adaptability -- the level at which a company learns and innovates. Focus and speed, they argue, are the essential competitive qualities. Following the guidelines recommended in this book, executives with responsibility for setting and implementing strategy should be able to make significant improvements in three months and major changes within a year. Bullseye! is must reading for all general managers at the corporate, division, and business-unit levels.
