Bringing together cultural, economic and social historians from across Europe and beyond, this volume offers a consideration from a number of perspectives of the principal forces that further integrated the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe during the first century of industrialisation. The essays not only review and analyse the commercial, financial and monetary factors, negative as well as positive, that bore upon the region's initial stages of modern transformation, but also provide a ready introduction to major aspects of the economy and society of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Beginning with two chapters providing the context to the development of Ottoman relations with Western Europe up to the second half of the nineteenth century, the collection then moves on to explore more specific questions of trade links, the impact of improved transportation and communications, the development and changing nature of Ottoman finance and banking, as well as European investment in Turkey. The outcome is a broad ranging consideration of how all these issues played a fundamental role in the final decades of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of Turkey as a modern state with links to both east and west. The essays in this collection derive from the EABFH colloquium held in the Imperial Mint, Istanbul, in October 1999.

The waning years of the Russian Empire witnessed the development of a rich tradition of trumpet playing. Noted trumpet scholar and performer Edward Tarr's latest book illuminates this tradition, which is little known in the West. Tarr's extensive research in hitherto inaccessible Russian archives has uncovered many documents that illuminate the careers of noted performers. These documents are reproduced here for the first time. A concise chronological summary of Russian political and musical developments provides an effective backdrop for this inventory of trumpeters. The author ably demonstrates how profoundly Russian trumpet-playing and pedagogy were influenced by emigrées, particularly from Germany (Wilhelm Wurm, Willy Brandt, Oskar Böhme), and how Russian-born trumpeters like Vladimir Drucker subsequently influenced the American musical scene. In his Lexicon of Trumpeters, both Russian and 'Foreign, ' Active in Russia, Tarr supplements his own research with information from valuable but obscure secondary sources in Russian. This lexicon carries the story into the late twentieth century, and includes modern legendary figures such as Timofey Dokshizer. Over the past few decades, East Asia developments in terms of production, population and trade have shown remarkable dynamics. Ensuing changes in these regions of non-Western civilization are commonly interpreted in terms of a successful adaptation of modernity. However, experiences such as the regional crisis in 1997 and the tragic incident of September 2001 more than ever ask for more intensive civilizational dialogues, and urge us to carefully consider the implications of capitalist development in the East Asian context(s). This book deals with the issues of Asian values, civilizational encounters between East and West, and the development of capitalism "and" its culture in East Asian countries. Its focus on inter-civilizational exchanges and the intricate interplays between civilizational and capitalist dynamics helps us to better understand our human story and history.
